I think I mentioned that I went back to work middle of January after over 10 years of being at home. This has been a huge learning curve for the 3 of us. I did allow myself to get a cleaner and she helps for a few hours once a fortnight (every 2 weeks). We also have a landscaper come in to help with the pruning of the bushes in the back yard once every other month but for the most part I continue to try and run the house myself. How’s that going I hear you ask? Well the blog is even more behind the times than ever now and for that I apologise. Since last writing Kirsten and I had a wonderful week in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan staying with our friends the Kelly family that we met on the Disney Cruise. I am sure, for those of you who read my daily diary you will remember the trials and tribulations of the family during the cruise and the fact that they had to leave the ship in Cabo. Everyone is doing fine and we were treated as part of the family. I keep telling them thank you as we had such a great time. Kirsten, not used to having siblings, was in her element with 4 for a week. By the end of the week she even had their names rather than calling them “brother” which I thought was cute. Jennifer certainly kept us busy for the week on top of keeping her household as close to routine as possible and this included: bowling; a trip to a Jungle Java; visiting local parks; a gymnastics class for Kirsten; and of course the Henry Ford museum
We had hoped to see a real snowfall. It was a little funny to watch Kirsten hop from snow pile to snow pile yelling “snow”. Hey, don’t forget she’s from the desert. She’s seen real snow once in her lifetime before this. We did get all excited when there was a severe weather warning threatening 6-8″ for the penultimate night but when we woke up there was a few inches of very wet snow that disappeared in a matter of hours so that was no good.
Now we’re getting ready for our next trip. This one is to go back and visit the family simultaneously celebrating my big 40! I can’t wait to see my sister and meet my nephew for the first time. He turned 1 on February 3rd. Some of you may remember the birth announcement I posted on the blog last year. He was born 3 weeks after we left from our last visit back at the start of 2011.
Apologies if I’ve forgotten to share anything with you. I know it’s going to be a while before the next time so please take care.

So, our first guests arrive this evening at Sky Harbor (Phoenix Airport) at 17.10. It’s my parents (Sigrid’s parents). They are with us until September 20th. Then Conrad and MC arrive on September 21st and stay with us until October 5th. We’ve then got a few weeks free so have booked ourself our first real family holiday. We’re going to go to San Diego from October 18 – 23rd and the dogs are booked into Raintree Pet Resort. Then last but not least John’s parents arrive on October 29th just in time for Halloween and leave on November 16th. Yes it’s the busy season.
Kirsten is loving school. The problem is I can’t mention it on a non-school day as she’s immediately telling me to get shoes on, find my bag and get the car started…not that she’s keen or anything. We’ve dropped gymnastics. I wasn’t sure if I’d over scheduled her anyway, but when we arrived at class on Monday we found the other 3 had all transferred to another day due to their siblings starting school and parents not wanting to make 2 visits to the same place in a week. When I spoke to the owner she asked if I could transfer Kirsten to another day as she wanted to cancel her class and I said that wasn’t possible. Also I realised that Kirsten needed at least the company of one child as Monday’s class was a bit of a failure as Kirsten had no competition. In the end we decided that I would just stop Kirsten all together. This is fine as with all the guests arriving she gets a little extra time to be spoiled (as if she needs more spoiling).
Hopefully you’ve all seen the pictures of Kirsten’s art work that I have posted on our shutterfly page. If not follow the link on the right hand side of the screen and once there look in the “Projects” folder. She’s quite the budding artist although she doesn’t like to get her hands messy…sorry nora not sure how I’m going to get those painted hand prints for you.
Kirsten is also close to being potty trained. Not that I’ve done any of the work. Because there have only been 6 in her class the teachers have been working on it and on school days Kirsten is pretty good. It’s just those in between ones. I think this morning we sat on the toilet about 8-10 times (including whilst at Fresh & Easy) peed in the toilet about twice and I still had to change the nappy about half a dozen times (including 4 in 30 minutes)…let’s not go there. I’m hoping with the help of the guests in the next few weeks (especially Nanny) we’ll get there. I’ll let you know how it goes.

So we’re coming into Kirsten’s 3rd full week. She and I are kept busy with her schedule and I wasn’t sure if it was going to be too much or not. We are as follows: Monday – gymnastics; Tuesday – school; Wednesday – swimming; Thursday – school and Friday is catch up.
Her naps reduced last week which surprised me but I think she was a little overstimulated then we went to the gym yesterday morning and on our return she went to bed. We woke her up as it came to almost 3 hours and 15 minutes and she was still settled in bed by 7.30pm (her choice) and slept until 7am this morning. We’ll see what happens this week.
This morning we have gymnastics. Last Monday she threw a tantrum halfway through the class wanting her snacks out of my bag. Kirsten likes to have food when she wants it rather than when we decide (a habit I need to break). It is exactly the same with drink and preschool commented on that fact.
I also think we’re very close to giving the potty training another go. We are changing the nappy even more as every time she does something she lets us know but she is now sitting on the toilet before bathtime rather than using the plastic potty as soon as she gets into the bath. I think I’ll ask my Mum for help when she arrives in about 11 days and maybe in the 2.5 weeks she’s here we’ll get it done. Who knows.
I’ve been taking pictures of all Kirsten’s artwork from school (almost a project a day) and I’ll get those pictures up during the week. Kirsten’s phrase of last week was “what are you doing here?” which is very funny to here when she says it to John as he walks through the door and comes home in the evening.
Well keep in touch.
August 11, 2009
Well Kirsten had her second day of school today. I put sunscreen on her put not on her face and neck and the teachers kept a closer watch on her than last week. When I picked her up she was a little flushed but that died down within minutes of collecting her and she had no reaction anywhere else so it looks as though her face is just way too sensitive to put anything on it. I checked what they had eaten for snacks last Thursday and that was apple juice and saltine crackers. She’s eaten both of those before and definitely no allergic reaction so I’ll continue to keep an eye on her but will also continue to put no sunscreen on her face and keep her out of direct sun.
When I dropped Kirsten off this morning there were a lot more tears. I know Kirsten cried last week but today so did all the others. It was day 2 and they knew what to expect.
For those of you who haven’t followed the link at the side of the page to our shutterfly pictures here is one that I took of Kirsten when she lined up outside school last Thursday for her first day. Yes her face is a little white, but that was the sunscreen.
Yesterday, Monday, she also had her 3rd week at gymnastics class. When getting her ready at home I’ve realised that if I tell her we are going bouncing she knows exactly what is going on. It tires her out which was one of the aims and she loves the access to a large gymnasium with all the trampolines, rings, etc. She slept for 3 hours yesterday after lunch and 3 hours today. I’m continuing with my sewing and have made a start on my Christmas gifts! Don’t laugh. With all our guests starting to arrive I want to make use of the free postage and of course if I am going to post things they also have to be ready by middle of November. John and I have even been discussing Christmas cards. Need to work out our annual picture.
Talk to you all soon.
